High-throughput crystallography
Requirements of industrial structural biology today emphasize the need for high levels of automation in order to achieve an economically viable level of data generation. Big pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are moving to automate both the front and back ends of the crystallography process in order to generate more structures more quickly. On the front side, automated crystallization systems screen proteins for optimal crystallization conditions and then grow optimized crystals. Once crystals have been grown, automation systems mount and align crystals, on either synchrotron beam lines or high performance home laboratory X-ray diffraction systems, for automatic data collection. Even structure solution software is now automated for maximum throughput.
