Two leading analytical X-ray companies introduce the world's most brilliant and stable microfocus X-ray source

Auburn Hills, MI, USA and Almelo, The Netherlands - July 22, 2006. Rigaku Innovative Technologies Inc. (Rigaku), a subsidiary of Rigaku Americas Corporation and PANalytical B.V., a member of Spectris Plc are pleased to announce the introduction of a new jointly developed high brilliance micro focus X-ray source. The MicroMax™-002+ will be first shown at the 2006 meeting of the American Crystallographic Association July 22 -27 in Honolulu, Hawaii. This new source is a complete, turnkey X-ray beam module, consisting of a high performance X-ray optic designed and manufactured by Rigaku, factory integrated and tested with a sealed micro focus tube and generator from PANalytical. The new X-ray source module blends state of the art sealed tube micro focus X-ray generation technology with the latest developments in graded multi-layer optical design.

The micro focus X-ray source module is a stand-alone system, which can be used as a building block for integration in a diffraction system or other applications. Applications are wide ranging and include the determination of protein structures critical for the mapping of the human genome, semiconductor metrology to improve yield and chip quality in complex electronic devices, and the determination of nanoparticle size distributions and shape functions for the research of drug delivery mechanisms. The new source provides up to twice the usable X-ray flux when compared to currently available sealed tube micro focus source technology. The focal dimension of the micro focus tube is 20 μm. The source offers excellent stability of spot size, spot position and intensity.

This most recent collaboration between Rigaku and PANalytical follows a long and successful history of product integration between the two companies for both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) systems dating back to 1984. One of Rigaku's core competencies has always been the accurate manufacturing of X-ray optical modules and rotating anode X-ray generators, whereas PANalytical has a long history in the development of sealed tube X-ray sources. The jointly developed X-ray source will be branded by the two companies separately, and integrated into their respective lines of analytical X-ray products.
