Rigaku and HKL Research, Inc. Announce Development & Distribution Partnership for HKL-2000 X-ray Diffraction Data Analysis Software

The Woodlands, TX — June 17, 2003. Rigaku, the world's leading macromolecular X-ray crystallographic hardware vendor, today announced a worldwide development and distribution partnership with HKL Research, Inc. to provide optimized and enhanced HKL-2000 software for data processing with Rigaku products. HKL-2000, a new program package based on the original HKL Suite, is the premier software of choice for structural biology. Analysis of the Protein Database (PDB) shows that nearly 80% of all entries were processed with an HKL package.

Available with all Rigaku detectors (including the R-AXIS imaging plate (IP) and Saturn CCD series detectors), the HKL-2000 software package provides crystallographers with several important benefits related to: strategy and simulation, 3-D processing, mosaicity refinement during processing, as well as variable spot size. Due to its 3-D processing strategy, HKL-2000 can handle data from crystals with high mosaicity, which can be of critical concern in macromolecular (protein) crystallography.

With the completion of the Human Genome Project, emphasis is shifting to the protein compliment of the human organism. This has given rise to the science of proteomics—for the purpose of understanding gene expression and as an integral part of new drug discovery and development. Proteomics includes not only the identification and quantification of proteins, but also the determination of their localization, modifications, interactions, activities, and, ultimately, their function. An essential part of this work involves "structural genomics," the rapid 3-D structure determination of large numbers of proteins. X-ray crystallography is a core technique used to elucidate these protein structures.

Rigaku—Leading With Innovation

Since its inception in Japan in 1951, Rigaku has been at the forefront of analytical and industrial instrumentation technology. Rigaku and its subsidiaries form a global group focused on life sciences and general purpose analytical instrumentation. With hundreds of major innovations to their credit, Rigaku companies are world leaders in the fields of small molecule and protein crystallography, X-ray spectrometry and diffraction, X-ray optics, as well as semiconductor metrology. Rigaku employs over 1,100 people in the manufacture and support of its analytical equipment. Its products are in use in more than 70 countries—supporting research, development, and quality assurance activities. Throughout the world, Rigaku continuously promotes partnerships, dialog, and innovation within the global scientific and industrial community.

About HKL Research, Inc.

HKL Research, Inc. established in 1995 and located in Charlottesville, VA, is a premier source for software intended for the analysis of X-ray diffraction data collected from single crystals. The company provides high quality software and hardware solutions for X-ray crystallography laboratories and synchrotron beam lines. The HKL-2000 suite incorporates extended versions of programs included in the HKL package: XdisplayF for visualization of the diffraction pattern, Denzo-3D for data reduction and integration, and Scalepack for merging and scaling of the intensities. It also consists of several new program modules coordinated by the graphical command center. The graphical user interface allows smooth control of diffraction experiment and provides rich visual feedback from data reduction and structure solution. HKL and HKL-2000 have been used both in crystallography of macromolecules as well as in small molecule crystallography. HKL-2000 has been developed by research groups of Dr. Zbyszek Otwinowski (University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas) and Dr. Wladek Minor (University of Virginia, Charlottesville). Development of HKL-2000 is the continuation of work started at the University of Chicago, Yale University and Purdue University.
