Percent crystallinity of a CuO aerogel

Properties of materials are governed—and can be tuned—by the ratio of the amount of amorphous and crystalline substances present. Profile fitting procedures provide the material scientist with a strong tool for routine—as well state-of-the-art—materials characterization.

Using a profile shape function (PSF), peaks are measured as accurately as possible and, based on corrected FWHM values, percent crystallinity can be calculated for the material.

The diffraction pattern shown below, collected on Rigaku's Ultima IV multipurpose diffraction system, represents one such study on a copper oxide (CuO) aero gel material. The percent crystallinity was reported as 65.6% for this sample.
