Introducing the SmartSite RS, the world's
smallest portable field stress analyzer |
|
2D semiconductor detector accelerates data acquisition |
The SmartSite RS is the world's smallest portable stress analyzer that is especially designed for field analysis. It enables
users to characterize residual stress of metal parts ranging from large construction projects to individual products, e.g. bridges, maritime vessels, aircraft, aerospace equipment, pipelines, heavy machinery and automobiles.

MiniFlex – a teaching tool for every materials science department |
|
Cost-effective way to bring XRD experiments into the teaching laboratory |
Materials Science has become an essential part of both industrial and academic research. At today's universities the education of future material scientists is essential to help further ongoing technological advancement. As part of this course of study, hands on experience with IR, Raman, TEM, SEM and XRD measurement techniques is important in teaching students the skills required for the analysis of advanced materials. The MiniFlex benchtop XRD system is an easy-to-use, cost-effective way to bring XRD experiments into the teaching laboratory. For more > |

Welcome
We created The Bridge as a way to more frequently connect with our users and others interested in materials science and analysis. This connection is only one method that Rigkau uses to communicate with people operating in the field. One-on-one type interactions also play an important part in our corporate culture and this was emphasized last week when we hosted Professors Alexandra Slawin and Derek Wollins of the University of St. Andrews at our Haijima factory in Tokyo. Alex and Derek have been using Rigaku's single crystal products for the last
20 years, experiencing the technology changes from scintillation detectors, to CCD detectors, and now to hybrid pixel array detectors. As a company, we have truly benefited from this long-term relationship and appreciate the input and feedback they have provided us over the past two decades. As great as the Internet is, nothing replaces a good, long-term human relationship.
Enjoy the newsletter.

Thin Film Training Textbook
High-resolution X-ray Diffraction Method (Part 10)
Rigaku Corporation
Our latest installment from Rigaku's Thin Film Training Textbook discusses the specific case of double crystal optics
as part of the general category of multiple crystal optics. Discussions up to the previous section assumed incident X-ray beams are monochromatic. However, X-rays emitted from an X-ray source have a wavelength distribution, and the effects of this wavelength dispersion must be taken into account with double crystal optics. The manner in which this effect emerges depends on the double crystal arrangement. In addition, monochromator systems based on channel-cut crystals
are described.

EDXRF Application Note
Sulfur and ultra-low chlorine in crude oil
Applied Rigaku Technologies
Monitoring sulfur and chlorine content is important in crude oil. Chlorine may be present through natural processes or possible adulteration. If unmeasured or not corrected for, chlorine may bias the sulfur measurement or potentially cause corrosion damage in the blending operation, in pipelines or during the refining process. This
application note describes a fast, simple means of screening and monitoring the chlorine content of crude at the well site, along pipelines, during blending and
in other pre-refining checks. For more > |

WDXRF Application Note
Fe, Ni and Co Alloy Analysis by the Fundamental Parameter Method
Rigaku Corporation
The multi-channel X-ray fluorescence spectrometer Simultix14
enables simultaneous measurement of all elements in samples
and is often used for process control in production lines
where extremely rapid analysis is required. In 1983, Rigaku
became the first XRF manufacturer to introduce FP method
software for WDXRF spectrometers. Since then, the FP method
has been widely used, from screening analysis and
semi-quantitative analysis to production control in many
industries. In this note, Fe, Ni and Co alloy analysis by the FP method is demonstrated. For more > |

Scientific Book Review
The Science of Shakespeare: A New Look at the Playwright's Universe
By Dan Falk, Thomas Dunne Books, 384 pages, ISBN 1250008778
Book Review by Jeanette Ferrara, Princeton University, Class of 2015
Dan Falk's latest work is an exciting exploration of the relationship between one of literature's greatest playwrights and the scientific world of his time. Even though each chapter title is a quoted line from one of the Bard's plays, Falk begins them by establishing the historical context of relevant scientific inventions and discoveries, and works his way towards connecting Shakespeare to these developments. What drives the book is Falk's tangible passion not only for the historical scientific context in which Shakespeare's plays were written, but his passion for the plays themselves. For more > |
