Custom coatings

Over the last 20 years, multilayer optics have revolutionized the measurement capabilities and experimental setups for elemental analysis, diffraction and scattering. These optics work over a broad band of radiation from 40 eV to more than 100 keV. This technology was pioneered by Rigaku under our former company name of Osmic™.

Multilayers are based on the reflection of radiation following Bragg’s law:

2d·sinθ = nλ

  • d is a periodicity of layers
  • θ is the incident/reflection angle of the radiation
  • λ is the wavelength (energy) of the radiation
  • n is an integer (n = 1, 2, 3, ... ) and shows that higher harmonic multiples of λ are possible

  • d ~ 1 nm — 30 nm

  • θ ~ 0° — 90°

  • Nmax ~ 1000

  • λ ~ 0.01 nm — 40 nm

  • Eph ~ 0.03 keV — 100 keV

  • Length is up to ~1 m

We have the ability to suppress higher harmonics for specific customer requirements.

The d-values in multilayer technology are built out of at least two different materials, which are coated (magnetron and ion-beam sputtering) in up to 1000 double layers on a substrate.

Material choice is critical to obtain optimized performance.

Using Bragg's law, one can tailor the multilayer to the needs of customers and their experiments.

The main factors in this customization are the choice of layer materials and d-spacing design along the mirror and in the depth of the multilayer structure.

The following table shows our core competencies and coating capabilities:
