Synchrotron coatings

Over the last 20 years, multilayer optics for the broad band of radiation from 40 eV to more than 100 keV have revolutionized the measurement capabilities and experimental setups for elemental analysis, diffraction and scattering. This technology was pioneered by us under our former name Osmic™.

At CHESS, more than 20 different designs of Rigaku multilayers are in use. Every solution for a synchrotron beamline needs some adaptation and tailoring.

New products: Striped Double Multilayer Monochromators (SDMM)

In general, substrates used for multilayer coatings need very smooth surfaces, with roughness values typically less than 0.2 nm RMS. This requirement drives up the price of substrates for synchrotron optics. Rigaku has developed the ability to coat multiple stripes onto each individual substrate. To change monochromator settings, the optics need only a transverse translation to illuminate each progressive stripe. The examples shown in the presentation below show how this cost effective approach can increase the capability of your beamline.
