The VariMax™ DW optic
Dual wavelength capabilities offer additional phasing capabilities in a home lab environment. For example, in macromolecular crystallography, the larger anomalous scattering term for S from Cr radiation enhances the ability to phase from S atoms alone. As people begin to work on more systems in which incorporation of Se-Met is not straight forward or impossible, phasing from S and other heavier elements becomes more important.
The VariMax DW optic assembly contains two VariMax optics, each designed for a specific wavelength. The optic assembly can be mounted to either one of Rigaku's dual wavelength rotating anode X-ray sources, the FR-E+ DW or the MicroMax-007 HF DW. Each of the VariMax optics is pre-aligned and each can be brought to its optimized working position by a simple rotation.

As in other VariMax optic products, a computer controlled adjustable slit is supplied that allows the flexibility to adjust the divergence in favor of flux when the unit cell size allows or reduce divergence for resolution of large unit cells.
Available combinations of wavelengths include Cu/Cr and Cu/Mo. Other combinations of wavelengths are available upon request and include Kα and Kβ lines of Cr, Cu, Mo, and Ag.
