New Brochure for the R-AXIS HTC Imaging Plate Detector for Macromolecular Crystallography

The Woodlands, TX — June 14, 2004. Rigaku today announced the publication of a new brochure that describes the world's only high-throughput imaging plate detector for macromolecular crystallography. The 4 page document describes the instrument in detail, providing both features and benefits and well as detailed specifications. Included are perspective drawings and an exploded schematic of operating components.

Titled R-AXIS HTC: Advanced high-throughput imaging plate X-ray detector for macromolecular crystallography, the brochure provides guidance for crystallographers seeking state-of-the-art detectors, especially for the home laboratory environment. Rigaku's R-AXIS HTC features the high-throughput capability of a CCD while maintaining the positive attributes of previous R-AXIS systems, which are considered to be the general-purpose workhorse detectors in protein crystallography. The unique three-plate system of the R-AXIS HTC allows for simultaneous expose, erase and readout operations. While one plate is collecting data, a second plate is in the readout station being processed and the third plate is positioned in an erase station, being prepared for the next exposure. This means that the duty cycle is limited only by the speed of the IP transport from one position to the next, making the R-AXIS HTC highly efficient for screening samples or for experiments with brief exposure times.

The 300 mm by 300 mm aperture of the R-AXIS HTC allows for simultaneous collection of a large section of reciprocal space. Imaging plates do not need to be corrected for distortion, dark current accumulation or temperature-related response. Their linearity approaches six orders of magnitude, which means that very strong and weak reflections can be collected on the same exposure. IPs are sensitive, have high spatial resolution, have a very low and constant background level and are not susceptible to zingers. These characteristics make the R-AXIS HTC ideal for experiments where long exposures are required. Sensitivity and a quick duty cycle make it ideal for experiments with short exposures, a priority for high-throughput home laboratory environments.
