Identification of carpenter MP35N alloy using SQX analysis

The ability to accurately but rapidly identify specialty alloys is of great value to producers, fabricators, distributors, users and recyclers. One such alloy is Carpenter MP35N.

Carpenter MP35N alloy is a nonmagnetic, nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy possessing a unique combination of ultrahigh tensile strength (up to 300 ksi [2068 MPa]), good ductility and toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance. In addition, this alloy displays exceptional resistance to sulfidation, high temperature oxidation, and hydrogen embrittlement.

Because of its unique combination of properties, MP35N alloy has been used in a wide variety of applications. MP35N alloy has been used in fasteners, springs, nonmagnetic electrical components and instrument parts in medical, seawater, oil and gas well, and chemical and food processing environments.

To test the ability of the Rigaku ZSX Primus WDXRF spectrometer to accurately identify such a specialty alloy using the SQX semi-quantitative calibration, a piece of unknown "high temp alloy" barstock was placed in a 30 mm diameter sample holder for analysis by EZScan.

It is clear that a fast, accurate identification of specialty alloys can be made in a very simple approach using the considerable analytical capabilities of the Rigaku ZSX Primus or Rigaku ZSX Primus II WDXRF systems employing the Semi-Quantitative (SQX) analysis. While a piece of bar stock was used here, any alloy specimen that can be trimmed and surfaced reasonably well should yield similar results.
