Background - Rigaku

For over 70 years, Rigaku has been at the forefront of analytical and industrial instrumentation technology. Today, with hundreds of major innovations to their credit, the Rigaku group of companies are world leaders in the fields of general X-ray diffraction, thin film analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, small angle X-ray scattering, protein and small molecule X-ray crystallography, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray optics, semiconductor metrology, X-ray sources, computed tomography, nondestructive testing and thermal analysis.

At Rigaku, we develop the analytical techniques and technologies that support fundamental research in materials and life science, as well as delivering solutions for quality control that are essential for the manufacture of safe and reliable products.

Background

The Office of Corporate Planning (OCP) is responsible for managing Rigaku’s internal strategic planning processes, such as creation and maintenance of the Mid-Term Management Plan and certain key internal meetings. The OCP is also responsible for some key projects for Rigaku’s long-term sustainable growth and preparation for an IPO and beyond. Due to an increase in activity level and a need for greater interaction with Rigaku’s overseas group companies, the OCP is looking to make several new hires.

Key activities for the position

The OCP is responsible for various projects and initiatives that cover areas that are new to Rigaku. The new employee will have an opportunity to contribute actively to one or more of these projects, potentially in a leadership role depending on their level of prior experience. The main projects are:

  • Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) Project: Looking towards an IPO, Rigaku has launched a cross-company ESG project to ensure that the company can meet the standards expected of a listed company. The ESG project will lead the company in implementing key initiatives in areas such as CO₂ emission reduction, supply chain risk management, improved reporting on environmental and social indicators, and other areas needed to meet the requirements of the modern investor.
  • Supporting communication with Rigaku’s overseas subsidiaries: This initiative aims to provide stronger information flow between Rigaku HQ and the overseas group companies. This requires work with senior stakeholders in Japan and each of our regional subsidiaries.

Qualifications and skills

Languages: We are looking for someone with strong written and verbal communication skills in English so they can communicate directly with internal and external counterparts in English. In addition, the candidate will need enough Japanese knowledge to communicate with colleagues in Japan.

ESG experience: Experience related to ESG is welcome but not essential. This might include environment management, corporate law, corporate governance, global HR management or corporate planning. However, a strong interest in ESG / sustainability / corporate social responsibility area is a must.
International business experience: It will be an advantage for candidates to have experience in international customer-facing areas such as sales, marketing, PR, distributor management or similar.

Academic qualifications: BA/BSc or above university degree is essential. A Masters qualification in sustainability / environment management, marketing or engineering or an MBA would be advantageous.
