Petroleum or crude oil is a naturally occurring, toxic, flammable liquid consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, and other organic compounds, that are found in geologic formations beneath the Earth's surface. Petrochemicals are chemical products derived from petroleum. Some chemical compounds made from petroleum are also obtained from other fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas, or renewable sources such as corn or sugar cane.
For the quantification of everything from heavy elements in crude oil to sulfur in gasoline and diesel, Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and X-ray Transmission (XRT) are well established techniques for the petroleum and petrochemical industries. Rigaku offers the Rigaku NEX CG benchtop EDXRF benchtop instrument for monitoring and analyzing atomic elements at every stage of the exploration, production and distribution process — including ASTM D7220 & D4294, IP 532, EN ISO 8754 & 20847 for Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) — and the Rigaku NEX XT process analyzer for on-line measurement of sulfur for pipeline, blending and upgrading as well as bunker fuel blending for MARPOL compliance.
Lubricating oils are used in on-road and off-road engines, as well as in the lubrication of mechanical machinery. Each type is specifically formulated for a particular use. Various additives are formulated in base lube oil to enhance lube oil performance and create the optimum lubricity properties desired for each situation. Proper and safe operation of engines and machinery depends to a large degree on formulation of metallic additives. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a fast, simple method of analyzing lube oils for metallic composition. The EDXRF analytical technique is simple enough for use by non-technical operators, yet powerful enough for expert use in the research & development of new lube oil formulations.
